My Player, Part II Posted by AndyP on 02/21 at 09:21 in Baseball
2k Sports recently posted a blog talking about their new "My Player" mode as your created athlete works through baseball's minor league system. Part 2 is very much focussed on what happens when you reach the major leagues.

"You will see two very cool things that happen right away once you are in the Majors: Key Games and Clutch Moments. If you are simming on the Schedule, we will drop you into the important games and the clutch moments that you are involved in. This way, you can play through your full 15 year career without having to feel like you might miss any of the vital events of your player’s career in simmed games. As an added bonus, skill points earned in Key Games and Clutch Moments will be worth more than skill points earned in regular games."

Alerts inform you about the "Key Games" and drop you right into the action

In "clutch moments" you will get high leverage goals to progress your player

You need to achieve your goals to have any chance of making it in the pro's

If you played NBA 2k10 or NHL 2k10 you will be familiar with this menu screen

MLB 10: The Show - Sounds of the Show Posted by AndyP on 02/21 at 08:54 in Baseball
Last year the "MLB The Show" development team down in San Diego introduced a new feature called "Sounds of the Show" and on the MLB 10 community blog the developers have revealed details of the feature in this years game.

"In MLB 09 The Show, we gave you the ability to add your own music and attach that music to specific players for things like batter walk-ups, home runs, and relief pitcher entrances. In MLB 10 The Show, we have added an Edit Teams option, so you can add music to your favorite team and hear it in various game situations. So, say if you're nostalgic for your favorite Cubs announcer from your childhood singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” in the middle of the 7th, you can add it directly to the game and remember the good ole days.... sniff, sniff.

In Set Team Audio, you can add your own music to a variety of events such as:
Home Run Music
Strike Out Music
Drawing a Walk
Stolen Base
Away Team Error
Team Wins (Generic, Pennant, Division, and World Series)
Team Loses
Clutch Out Recorded
Relief Pitcher Entrance
In between Innings Music"

Trim the music to find the part that you want to play

Attach specific music to individual players

Record your own voice and add it to the game as a fan yell or crowd chant for any team or player.

MLB 10: The Show All-Star Week Features Posted by AndyP on 02/19 at 16:37 in Baseball
A PlayStation blog update reveals details of a new addition to the game this year focussed on the All Star celebrations.

"When we set out at the beginning of the year, one area we knew needed to be addressed was the addition of the Home Run Derby. As we began to dive into the feature, we thought rather than just offering it as a stand-alone feature (which it is), why not include it into all season-based modes' MLB All-Star Week festivities. Now when you're playing in Season, Franchise or Road To The Show, you'll have the opportunity to play in the Home Run Derby."

MLB 2k10 Franchise Mode Posted by AndyP on 02/19 at 07:26 in Baseball
From the latest "Developers Blog" over on the 2k Sports website, it's clear that 2k has committed some time to improving franchise mode this year. That's always welcome in my opinion.

"This year we added 40 Man Rosters/September Call-Ups, Compensation Picks, Spring Training, Trade Finder, Player Finder, Super Sim, Franchise Blogs, Variable Contracts and MLB Today presentation (we’ll also have a lot more about this in an upcoming Insight). I’ll go into a few of these new features in more depth later on in this write-up."

Catcher Calling the Game ! Posted by AndyP on 02/17 at 11:37 in Baseball
For the 2010 version of the MLB The Show, the development team have made a bunch of very welcome additions to their popular "Road to the Show" mode. One of them is that you can now, finally, play the position of catcher and assume the unique responsibilities of that role. Last year, if you chose to play that position you had the same options and choices as a player at any other position.

"This year, we have added “calling pitch selection” and “calling pitch location” to your RttS catcher’s responsibilities. When you are in the game defensively as a catcher, you will be responsible to select the pitch that you want thrown. The system works just like it does for selecting pitches as the pitcher does. The pitcher might shake you off, or he might accept that pitch. If he does shake you off, you choose a pitch again. If you choose the same pitch, he will figure it’s really what you want and will accept it, at this point. Once you have selected the pitch, you will be responsible to select where you want the ball thrown. You can choose any of the nine zones within the strike zone, or you can choose eight areas outside of the zone if you want the ball off the plate (four outside edges and four outside corners). Now just like in real life, this doesn’t mean the pitcher will hit his spot. It just means this is where he is aiming. The better the pitcher you have throwing to you, the more effective your location calling will be."

A Live Journal Of MLB 2K10 Posted by AndyP on 02/16 at 09:08 in Baseball
Game Informer have started a blog charting the progress of a created player in the games new mode, "My Player".

"In this mode, my task is simple: work my way up through the Minor Leagues to the Majors. If I perform well on the mound, I'll receive experience points that I can distribute to different pitching categories. In addition to improving my hurler's stats, I'll have to keep an eye on his standing in Cubs' organization.

Rather than just giving you a recap on my baseball career, I figured I would pull you into the game with a live blog that charts my players development."

Check that ! Posted by AndyP on 02/08 at 17:36 in Baseball
So 2k have done a 180 on their decision to omit the check swing from MLB 2k10. Or was it all just a rumor to get us talking ? In a new blog published on the 2k Sports website today, the following announcement was made as part of a much larger blog post dedicated to the whole pitching and hitting duel that 2k is hyping up as a key part of the game this year.

"Now, I know what you are thinking... if this is so realistic, then why have I read from recent previews that there might not be a check swing in Major League Baseball 2K10? Before we get into check-swing talk, let me clarify that the check-swing is in fact part of an upcoming patch."

Good news for fans of 2k baseball.

MLB 10: The Show - Online Season Leagues Posted by AndyP on 02/06 at 18:16 in Baseball
Sony knew that their online leagues were a disappointment last year and have set about this time around to focus on redeveloping them into something much better. In the blog update, Jason Villa (a Producer on the MLB 10 The Show team) explains how.

Personally, I'd have liked to see some kind of MLB Network presentation (even if it were only replicated in the style of the menu and stat screens), with custom captured photos as part of a daily summary (rather than that outdated style of newspaper) but I'm probably being a little nit-picky.
